Specialized Programs - Quito, Ecuador  


Volunteer Program 6 weeks minimum: 2 weeks of Regular Program OR Super Intensive Program + 1 month internship or volunteer program with Spanish classes. The first 2 week minimum consists of preparatory Spanish lessons, either in the Regular or Super Intensive Program. If you are a complete beginner or post beginner in Spanish, additional preparatory lessons and/or weeks may be needed depending on the type of internship or volunteer work you are interested in. After the preparatory lessons have been completed, a one month minimum of internship or volunteer work combined with continued Spanish lessons is required. After the above requirements are met, students may extend their program with work only. After completing the course, the student will receive a certificate from the employer.
Requirements:Participants must have a University degree or be working toward one. The student must to submit a resume and introductory letter outlining their studies and/or experiences.

Registration Instructions:
       1. Submit one(1) NRCSA Registration Form for the Regular or Super Intensive Program for a minimum of 6 weeks.
       2. Submit a resume.
       3. Submit an introductory letter explaining what type of volunteer work you are interested in and some details about yourself (i.e. how many years of Spanish taken and estimated Spanish language level, if you have had any experience in volunteering or interning before, if you have any special skills that would be relevant to the type of work you are interested in, your goals, etc.).

Areas of work available include:
  •   Child and Infant Nutrition and General Care
  •   Teaching English to Middle and High School Aged Girls (October - June)
  •   Translation, International Correspondence and Clerical Work
  •   Support and Counseling for Women in Jail
  •   Art Education for Children and Adults (Professional Artists Only)
  •   Environmental Protection and Work with Indigenous Peoples
  •   Shelters and Homes for Street Children and Children of Prisoners
  •   Orphanages
  •   Rural Community Development in Health, Diet and Agriculture
  •   Physically and Mentally Disabled Children
  •   Medical (Medical Students and Medical Professionals Only. Must bring original, official proof of year in medical school or professional status to Ecuador)

These are unpaid positions.

SierrAzul Academic Adventure Group 20 hours per week. The SierrAzul academic program is conducted on the eastern doorstep of Antisana reserve, protecting one of the most unspoiled and beautiful tracts of cloud forest in the country. Now is the time for nature lovers, researchers, biologists and Spanish students to begin studies in SierrAzul in order to better understand the roles eastern slopes cloud forests play in the evolution and maintenance of vast amounts of tropical biodiversity. Students will be participating in the highly regarded Spanish program and also helping to preserve this beautiful natural area by providing the biological information on which ecotourism thrives.

The school will provide it's Regular Program in group classes on site. Lectures, activities, trekking, fishing, and tubing are a sampling of this unique program. All meals are included. The brand new lodge is built in a log cabin style. It has a Resident Program Director / Naturalist Guide, medical clinic and modern meeting rooms, entertainment areas and rooms with double accommodation.

Note: Those students enrolling in the SierrAzul program must be aware that the jungle area is high-risk for Yellow Fever and a vaccination for Yellow Fever may be necessary.


Medical Spanish & Volunteer "Salud" Program Group 20 hours per week specially focused on the advancement of Spanish language skills used in a medical setting. Observational learning and structured interaction Volunteer portion of the program allows students to practice the Spanish learned in a medical setting (hospital, clinic, etc.) while viewing practices utilized by doctors and nurses everyday.

8:00 After an early departure, we will head south to Cotopaxi National Park, home of the highest active volcano on earth! You can explore the Andean moorlands with highland birds, or hike up to the snow line and rest at the shelter. (4.800 meters above see level).
14:00 Lunch at the beautiful hacienda "El Porvenir" in the middle of the four volcanos
15:00 Horse back riding dressing like a "chagra or Andean cowboy" with poncho blankets, scarf, hat and leather zamarros.... great fun with easy adventure or hike around the waterfalls in the Pasochoa biological reserve.

Once inside the National Park, we will go to the interpretation center to obtain information about its location, history of major eruptions from the world’s highest volcano, and the local flora and fauna. We will continue our visit to Limpiopungo (or “open door”) lake. This is a perfect place to take breathtaking pictures of Cotopaxi, Sincholagua and Rumiñahui and to admire one of the most beautiful sights in Ecuador. The visit ends at the farmhouse.
