NRCSA Medical Programs in Oaxaca

Group Spanish Lessons & Medical Vocabulary PLUS Medical Facilities Visits

Program

Medical Vocabulary Spanish Program is designed to give medical professionals a broad base in the Spanish language with built-in medical vocabulary components. The program emphasizes communication (largely oral) so that practitioners are able to evaluate symptoms and explain treatments directly.

The Course consists of approximately 4 hours of daily instruction, including grammar and conversation classes and Cultural Workshops (see below). Class size is kept to a minimum, with the average being 5-9 students per class, and never exceeds 12 students.

To maximize learning, instructors incorporate a variety of teaching methods including the use of films, role-play, music, etc. Monday through Friday, students participate in a three hour morning grammar class followed by one hour of conversation class. Through this combination, students will not only learn Spanish grammar, but also how to apply that knowledge in everyday conversational use.

This program consists of the following:

9:oo am – 12:oo pm: Formal Spanish Classes, focusing on grammar, listening (Monday – Friday) & reading comprehension, & conversation

12:00 pm – 1:00 pm: Conversation hour (Monday - Friday)

1 hour/day: Intercambio, language exchange program with local (Monday–Thursday)

2 hours/day: Afternoon workshop focusing on medical conversation (Monday-Thursday) & vocabulary

Furthermore, there will be 2 visits per week to local clinics, and 1 visit to a traditional medicine practitioner in the second week of the program. Traditional medicine is an important part of Oaxacan culture.

Levels: The Institute offers 7 levels of classes with many sub levels to ensure proper placement of each student, ranging from the absolute beginner level to the more advanced Mexican and Latin American literature class.

Upon your arrival at the Institute you will be given a written and oral exam, administered by our highly trained staff. You will then be placed according to your written and oral expression and your previous language experience.

Classes are structured to fit the individual needs of each student.

• Beginning levels concentrate on mastering vocabulary, simple sentence structure and phonetics. Focus is placed on the students' ability to excel in everyday situations using the Spanish language.

• Intermediate levels encompass more complex vocabulary, sentence structure and application of grammatical rules to their reading, writing and speaking.

• Advanced level classes place a special emphasis on perfecting each student's oral and written comprehension. On any given day, students may be found discussing topics such as current events, politics, or short stories from homework assigned the previous night, or refining their oral skills through intense review of the grammar complexities of Spanish.

We understand the difficulties that can be encountered when learning a language. Our aim is to assist each student in achieving their personal goal with respect to learning Spanish. Our teachers use a variety of teaching methods to enable students to excel rapidly in their oral and written comprehension.

Lodging

Homestay

Living arrangements are an important factor in the cultural immersion process. For many students, a private bedroom in a carefully chosen Mexican home is the ideal accommodation option. Living with a local family provides students the opportunity to practice Spanish while learning about Mexican family life. The cost includes breakfast daily. Students may choose to take comida, the main midday meal, and/or cena, the light evening meal, with the family at additional cost.

Hotels, Posadas and Apartments

We can provide an extensive list of hotels and posadas for students, as well as make reservations. As an important city in Mexico, Oaxaca has many hotels ranging in class level from one to five stars.

Living in a posada offers the independence of an apartment without the demand of a time commitment. We works closely with two posadas:

• A more luxurious posada consisting of private rooms and baths, each with a refrigerator and sink area. The posada provides a microwave and coffee maker for communal use in an airy lobby area where students can eat, study, and socialize.

• A more rustic posada offers private rooms and baths along with a courtyard and a communal kitchen area. Single and double rooms are available. Both posadas are located within a short walk from the Institute, and approximately 10 minutes from the zσcalo.
